Thrills and Spills at Six Flags Magic Mountain

I’ve gotta start with the obvious – Six Flags Magic Mountain! It’s probably what most people think of when Santa Clarita comes up in conversation. Located just seven miles from Old Town Newhall, this park is seriously impressive.

They don’t joke around with that “Thrill Capital of the World” nickname. My stomach still flips thinking about those roller coasters! Have you ridden Twisted Colossus yet? My friends and I couldn’t stop screaming the entire time! And Crazanity? The name says it all!

Just a heads-up if you’re planning a family trip – most of the bigger rides have height requirements between 48 to 54 inches. But don’t worry about transportation. During summer, we hopped on the Santa Clarita trolley from Old Town Newhall and it took us right to the park entrance. Super convenient!

After all those thrills, I needed something more laid-back, so I explored Old Town Newhall. This historic district totally charmed me with its gold rush vibes and modern updates. Walking down Main Street felt like stepping into a movie set about early California!

We took the free guided tour (yes, FREE!), and I was blown away by Hart’s personal art collection. He clearly had a thing for Western and Native American art – some pieces looked like they belonged in a major museum! The views from the hilltop mansion are absolutely spectacular too.

We spent a morning exploring the canyon trails, which were surprisingly peaceful considering how close we were to the city. The Nature Center offers guided walks, but we decided to explore on our own. The trail signs were really informative about local plants and wildlife.

I signed up for their cow hug therapy session on a whim. I mean, how often do you get to hug a cow? I felt a little silly at first, but guys – it was AMAZING. These gentle giants are so calm and warming. I swear my stress levels dropped by half after just sitting with one of the cows for a while.

My sci-fi loving friend kept saying, “This is where they filmed Star Trek!” Apparently, these rocks have appeared in countless TV shows and movies. Now I notice them every time I watch old Star Trek episodes!

We hiked several trails through the 932-acre park, stopping constantly for photos. The rocks create these amazing shapes against the sky – especially near sunset when the light gets all golden and dramatic. Bring water though – it gets hot out there in the desert climate!

Experience History at Tesoro Adobe Historic Park

Another cool historical spot we discovered was Tesoro Adobe Historic Park. This Spanish-style house was built by Western film star Harry Carey Sr. back in the 1920s and 30s. His massive 2,000-acre ranch hosted all the big Hollywood names back in the day and even served as a film set!

We joined a house tour and loved seeing how early Hollywood royalty lived. The architecture is stunning – all those adobe walls and wooden beams. The grounds around the house are beautiful for a leisurely stroll too.

We lucked out because they were setting up for an outdoor movie screening that weekend. Watching classic films under the stars where they were actually filmed decades ago? Now that’s a unique Santa Clarita experience!

Meet Rare Apes at the Gibbon Conservation Center

On our final day, we visited the Gibbon Conservation Center just north of Santa Clarita. I’d never even heard of gibbons before (they’re these amazing small apes from Southeast Asia), but now I’m slightly obsessed with them!

We took a guided one-hour tour where staff explained all about gibbon conservation efforts. While we couldn’t interact directly with the animals (which is good – they’re wild animals after all), watching them swing from branch to branch was mesmerizing. And their calls! I’ve never heard anything like it – hauntingly beautiful.

It felt good knowing our admission fees support conservation efforts for these endangered animals. Small but impactful experiences like this really make a trip memorable.
